Limited laboratory equipment, few opportunities for advanced training and little exposure to international research standards hinder the advancement of Nepal’s scientific institutions. To help close these gaps, biomedical researcher Dr Sakhila Ghimire returned to her country of origin as a diaspora expert and joined the Research Institute for Biosciences and Biotechnology (RIBB).
Seeing the enthusiasm of the local researchers makes me confident that the knowledge we’re sharing has the potential for long-term positive effects. With her background in immunology and cell biology, she investigated how short-chain fatty acids affect human epithelial cells – the cells that line and protect surfaces of the body such as the gut, lungs, and skin – and their potential to reduce inflammation. But her mission went far beyond laboratory work. Sakhila trained researchers in formulating hypotheses, designing experiments, analysing data, and thinking critically about results. She also shared approaches to bridge the gap between theoretical research and practical benefits for local communities, helping align research objectives with public health needs.
Sakhila’s assignment helped build confidence among young researchers and encouraged them to adopt new techniques and analytical tools. By sharing international standards and fostering a culture of mentorship, she helped RIBB strengthen its foundation for long-term scientific progress.
I'm genuinely happy with my assignment as a diaspora expert. […] During my time here, I have been able to contribute to the foundational research […] potentially leading to significant advancements in public health, particularly in Nepal.
