About Diaspora2030

Welcome to Diaspora2030, a platform for people with a migration history who are interested or engaged in the field of sustainable development. “Diaspora” refers to people with a history of migration, who live temporarily or permanently outside their country of birth or origin, yet maintain emotional and material connections to their countries of origin.

The diaspora has demonstrated its crucial role in driving innovation, creating jobs, and addressing socio-ecological challenges in countries of origin. With our platform, we showcase some of these results, and highlight the significance of engaging the diaspora – as a development actor, in decision-making processes and in facilitating knowledge exchange. We provide information on opportunities for sustainable diaspora involvement in selected partner countries of German Development Cooperation. With our real-world stories, shared by the members of the diaspora, we hope to inspire you to be an active part of this mission.

Why Diaspora2030?

German Development Cooperation is committed to the Agenda 2030 of the United Nations. With the name Diaspora2030, we aim to show the significant contribution that the diaspora can make towards achieving these goals. We support development-minded individuals and organisations from the diaspora in Germany, helping them leverage their skills and expertise in the best possible way. This effort is part of our broader commitment to fostering civic engagement, recognising that the active involvement of non-state actors is crucial to the achievement of the Agenda 2030.

The Diaspora2030 website is run by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The services and funding opportunities presented on this platform are provided primarily through the GIZ Programme “Shaping development-oriented migration” (MEG), which is currently active in 14 partner countries, namely: Albania, Cameroon, Colombia, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Georgia, Ghana, India, Kosovo, Nepal, Serbia, Tunisia, Ukraine and Viet Nam. Commissioned by the BMZ, the MEG assists its partner countries to leverage the benefits of regular migration and engage diaspora for sustainable development.

In addition to the support from MEG, Diaspora2030 also provides information on other funding opportunities for development-focused diaspora engagement.
