I’ve spent years teaching business students how to start and run successful enterprises. Now, I’m putting my teachings into practice.”

Northeast India is a region rich in forests and biodiversity. However, it is also highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. In this biodiversity hotspot, beekeepers produce a unique type of honey from stingless bees, known as the “Mother of Medicine”.

India is the fifth largest exporter and the fastest-growing honey market globally. Yet, beekeepers in the remote areas of Northeast India often operate on a small scale and lack connectivity, resulting in them receiving only a fraction of the product's value. Through their venture, “Ecopreneur Brothers,” Dr Horam and his business partner, Dr Atoho Jakhalu, are empowering local beekeepers to access broader markets beyond their local reach, showcasing the best of their region. This ensures that beekeepers receive fair compensation for their valuable product.

What fascinates me is that honey is not just honey. Beekeeping is not only a vital source for community livelihoods, but also a crucial means for biodiversity and forest preservation, as bees play a vital role in pollination and ecosystem health.
