Domestic violence is a global issue that often remains hidden. According to the World Health Organisation, about one in three women worldwide experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. Many cases go unreported due to fear, stigma, or lack of access to support services. Alice Rosine Tiani wants to help change that.
Originally from Cameroon, Alice moved to Germany in 2018 to further her studies. She now works as a software developer and engineer. In 2022, the death of a close friend as a result of domestic violence prompted her to take action. “I told myself, if there had been a way for her to report what she was going through anonymously and safely, maybe things would have ended differently,” she reflects. “Many people are afraid or ashamed to go directly to their friends or relatives.”
With FemSafe, women facing violence can report the abuse directly and anonymously. The app will allow users to pre-select trusted contacts who can be alerted with a single tap during an emergency. The platform will also connect users directly with police lines, so that they can be reached much faster. Location data would be shared to help responders act quickly. In addition, FemSafe offers access to professional counselling online, and includes features to mask or hide the app on a user’s phone for added safety and discretion. Beyond the technical features, the aim is to give women a tool that helps them take back control.
