Since the beginning of the programme in June 2023, MEG has supported 116 missions by qualified individuals from the diaspora in Germany seeking to contribute to the development of their countries of origin through short-term assignments of up to three months. MEG offers support by covering the costs of the assignment and in finding a suitable partner organisation looking for international expertise. Out of these, 25 missions have been thoroughly documented and shown to have directly benefitted 3,817 individuals. Over half of this number are women.

One example from the field of climate action is a research assistant at the Technical University of Freiberg, who conducted trainings on sustainable agriculture across 12 communities in the Western North Region of Ghana. The trainings focused on practices like natural weed control and mixed cropping, reaching around 1,000 smallholder farmers. As a result, 62 percent of the participants adopted conservation agriculture methods that enhance soil health and sustainable land use.

Such findings underscore the strategic value of diaspora engagement in development cooperation.
