Many hospitals in Ghana face a shortage of resources, while medical staff lack state-of-the-art knowledge. Backed by the Programme Migration & Diaspora on behalf of Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Dr Kwaku Danso Agyei, a surgeon from Rostock, undertook a short-term expert assignment at the end of 2018 to a polyclinic in the Ashanti Region in the heart of Ghana. There, he coached doctors in the latest minimally invasive surgical techniques and helped the clinic to optimise its workflows, improving its ability to schedule and carry out operations.

I was able to use my skills and expertise to make a difference at Kumawu Goverment Polyclinic. It was impressive to see how quickly my colleagues learned new techniques and procedures. This will allow them to improve their work.

The clinic can now also respond more quickly to medical emergencies. As a result, up to 80,000 people from the region are benefiting from improved medical care.
